Global

The Brazil-China Law Schools Consortium was established in 2025 to address various gaps and explore new opportunities in the exchange of legal knowledge between the two countries. These opportunities include the creation of a network that fosters the development of a permanent academic community comprising professors, judges, and legal professionals from both nations; the establishment of legal exchange programs; and, above all, the creation of a high-level platform for sharing experiences to strengthen the legal systems of both countries. In response to these needs, various law schools from Brazil and China gathered at the headquarters of the National High Court of Brazil (STJ) on March 11th  and 12th , 2025, during the 1st Brazil-China STJ Congress on Environmental Law and Artificial Intelligence—a bilateral event promoted by the STJ International Program—to establish the consortium.

Consórcio Brasil-China

The educational institutions participating in the Brazil-China Law Schools Consortium share the goal of promoting comparative study, research, and teaching in the fields of law, judicial systems, and jurisprudence in Brazil and China. The consortium will carry out activities across a wide range of legal areas, with the possibility of prioritizing specific topics on a biennial basis.

The Brazil-China Law Schools Consortium had the National High Court of Brazil (STJ) as a facilitator and is initially jointly managed by the São Paulo Law School of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV Direito SP) and the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL). It will operate through the following activities:

  • Academic study and debate on both legal systems, fostering the exchange of experiences.
  • Development of a work agenda focused on topics of mutual interest, including in-person, hybrid, or virtual academic events such as congresses, seminars, and roundtables, as well as joint publications across different platforms.
  • Promotion of cooperation in teaching and research among the member institutions, including translation activities of relevant works and other texts between Portuguese and Mandarin.
  • Participation of faculty, students, and staff from the member institutions in consortium activities, including visits and academic exchanges.
