The Center for Law and Political Economy (Nudep) serves as a platform for research, teaching, and outreach, focusing on the interplay between law and political economy. By situating law within the dynamics of state, politics, and market interactions, NUDEP fosters discussions and analyses concerning the institutional structures of the market. It is particularly invested in facilitating research that explores marketcrafting, the interconnections between law, politics, and economic power, between interests and regulation, and the distributive effects of economic regulations.
Nudep unites a diverse network of professors, researchers, and students dedicated to advancing research agendas, pedagogical strategies and methodological references on issues at the nexus of law and political economy.
Nudep supports two main research streams: (i) Law, Democracy, and Market, and (ii) Economic Regulation and Financial Institutions. The first, coordinated by Professor Raquel Pimenta, examines the interplay between democracy, the state, and corporations, on the topics of corruption, economic power, state regulation and democratic processes. The second, led by Professor Mario Schapiro, focuses on the political dimensions of financial regulation in developing contexts. This line seeks to dissect the motivations, institutional structures, and distributive consequences of policies in areas like banking stability, financial technologies, and green finances.
