Flavia Scabin
Flavia Scabin is a professor and researcher at FGV Direito SP, where she also coordinates the Center for Human Rights and Business at FGV (FGV CeDHE). A lawyer from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), she holds a master's degree from the University of São Paulo and a doctorate in Public Administration from FGV. She attended the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, Columbia University (Extractive Industries and Sustainable Development), and the European University Center in partnership with Columbia Law School and Public Interest Law Institute (Law, Human Rights, and Ethics).
Through the Center for Human Rights and Business at FGV, some of her work includes (i) the development and implementation of a georeferenced monitoring tool for impacts related to the installation and operation of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant in the Brazilian Amazon region; (ii) acting as an Expert for the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office Task Force to prepare a diagnosis of the socioeconomic damages resulting from the disaster caused by the Fundão dam rupture in Mariana – MG, coordinating analyses involving remediation processes and Human Rights; (iii) auditing socio-economic projects aimed at repairing and compensating for the damages caused by the disaster from the Córrego da Mina do Feijão dam rupture in Brumadinho – MG, coordinating analyses of socio-environmental risks; (iv) coordinating a diagnosis to identify damages to shellfish gatherers impacted by the environmental disaster from mining near the Mundaú Lagoon in Maceió; (v) coordinating the development of parameters for the resilient reconstruction of the Municipality of Barão de Cocais – MG, impacted by a mining dam; (vi) coordinating the development of a governance solution to address climate disasters, following the environmental disaster from flooding in Rio Grande do Sul.
As a specialist in Environment and Business and Human Rights, she has worked as a consultant for the World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC), International Labor Organization (ILO), International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), and CEPAL, also responsible for the methodology and conduct of human rights due diligence training by the UN Global Compact in Brazil. She is currently a consultant for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and is responsible for the “Responsible Business Conduct in Latin America and the Caribbean” (CERALC) Project.
